About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Fly to Shanghai, stay 3 days then of by boat.

Flying US to Shanghai. Can I get the 144hr free transit at Shanghai then leave by sea to several countries, not returning to China. Then flying back to USA from Singapore.
