Can we apply for a free 72 hrs visa in Guangzhou?

We are flying in January from Amsterdam to GZ where we would like to stay for 72 hours and then fly further to Hongkong.

Yeah, your case suits for the free-visa transit. But you need to book the air tickets in advance for the whole trip.
