Visa necessary for SFO-Shanghai-SFO?

I am doing a mileage run. 3.5 hours between flight landing at shanghai and then taking off to return to SFO. Am staying at the airport. Do I need an entry permit?

You will not need a visa if you stay within the international area in airport.

There's no way ground staff will let her on board. UA's SFO base had been fined too many times by Chinese immigration for carrying incorrect documented pax so now they are very careful.

Visa is required for those on a US passport. Transit without visit is not allowed unless you are continuing to a third country. Its not allowed when returning to the same country of entry. Consider applying for a 10 year tourist L using US Passport, its much more convenient and totally worth it.
