About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I combine visa-free stays?

If I go to Shanghai and stay for 144 hours, can I then go to Beijing and stay for 144 hours or do I have to leave China and come back? Or, can I go to Shanghai and Beijing by train within a 144 hour period?

You cannot do either of those options without a visa. You can stay in Shanghai for 144 hours only if you are travelling Country A-Shanghai-Country B (where Country B is not China and not Country A). Same for Beijing, although Beijing currently offers only 72 hours, not 144.

What if I go:
Taipei → Shanghai → Hong Kong → other Chinese city → Taipei
Then I'm technically transitting between TPE and HK.

If you travel like Taipei → Shanghai(within 144 hours) → Hong Kong → Beijing(within 72 hours) → Taipei, you can enjoy 144 hour and 72 hour free transit in Shanghai and Beijing respectively. Besides, you should enter Beijing and leave there by air.
