May I stop in Guangzhou for 72 with a confirmed reservation and seat to travel to Taiwan?

I would like to fly China Southern from LA to Guangzhou, spend 72 hours then fly China Southern to Taipei, Taiwan. There is no visa required in Taiwan so I would have a confirmed reservation and seat to continue on the Taiwan. May I use the 72 hour free transit with my connecting city Taipei, Taiwan?
