About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

144 visa free application process for cruise passengers

April 2018 UK citizens arriving in Shanghai cruise port from Hong Kong then to Japan the same day. 8 hours guided tour of Shanghai with cruise company. I assume we qualify for 144 hour free but cruise company says we should make our own arrangements for visas as applicable. Does the cruise company need to be involved in the process or can we deal with it individually on arrival in Shanghai?
Many thanks.

You'll be given the free entry after you present your outbound ticket and arrival card to the immigration officer at the port. Cruise companies will not be involved in this process, just you and the officer.
