Holder of US passport...Flying from Hong Kong to Beijing (56hours) then onwards back to the US

I am heading home from vacation in Hanoi from US, on the way back I am stopping for 3 days in Hong Kong, then to Beijing for 56 hours followed by direct flight back to US from Beijing. Do I qualify for 72 hour or need to apply before I leave US? Thanks.
