Oh, you can surely have a short visit in downtown. You may take subway or shuttle bus line 5 to Haizhu Square. Then walk to Beijing Road Pedestrian Street for dining and shopping, and Yanjiang Road to enjoy the scenery of Pearl River. And yes, China Southern Airline will offer free accommodation for overnight layover passengers. To use it or not depends on you.
