About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai 144hr visa (without flying)

UK citizen. Will be in Japan next year and also wish to visit Hong Kong. Rather than flying directly to HK, if I took a ferry from Japan to Shanghai and then had a pre-booked seat on the Shanghai to HK train, would I be eligible for either a 72 or 144hr stopover free transit?
