27 h layover at Kunming

Hi, I am a Hong Kong Resident and Indian passport holder travelling from HK to Kolkata, India and transiting through Kunming with a long layover 26 hours and 30 mins. Do i need to apply for a transit visa or a regular visa if i wish to step out of the airport. Alternately, at Kunming, could i stay inside the airport at the lounge the whole time?
