Hi Selina,
I have a similar situation. I fly from Sydney to Shenzhen then to Beijing and from there to Amsterdam.
It looks like if you are less than 24 hours in China you can get a 24 h TWOV (Transit without visa) with which you are allowed to travel to another (air)port and leave to a third country.

There is some confusion because other sources say the 24 h TWOV is only for staying on the air-side on the airport and then leave from there to a third country.
I will try to get confirmation of this from China Southern with which I fly.

Maybe someone can help us clear this up.

To Selina and Ewald, both of you cannot make use of 24 h TWOV in mainland China, so you are supposed to apply for a visa for the trip beforehand.
