About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Staying at a hostel, not a hotel. Do I need to register at the police station?

My flights:
Sydney-Beijing: My flight arrives on the 31st October at 4:30am at Beijing Capital Airport - Terminal 3. Will I be able to process this free visa at this time in the morning?
Beijing-Toyko (Japan): Leaving from the same airport and terminal on the 2nd November at 5:20pm.
Osaka (Japan)-Sydney: 25th November.
I booked my accommodation for two nights in a hostel, not a hotel. Do I need to go register at a police office? And if so, what should I bring with me, do they tend to speak English well and does is this a quite easy and fast process in general? And do I need to do it as soon as I get to the city centre or at any point within the first 24 hours?
Thanks in advance!

Maggie, yes, you are able to process the visa-free transit in Beijing in the early morning.
You need to register at the local police station. You need to bring passport, the air tickets and valid visa for Japan. The police officers may be able to speak English. The process is easy and can be completed within a short time. You can do that at any point within the first 24 hours, but if possible, you are advised to do that as soon as you arrive.
