About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

US->Beijing->Shanghi->ChiangMai Thailand.

I found the best deal through beijing and shanghi to Chiang Mai, and since my layover in beijing and shanghi are both overnight (but within 72 hours), I was hoping I would qualify for the free visa. However, I am aware that since I am flying into china to beijing, and then out of china via shanghi, I might not qualify. Any help?
