X1 visa to x2 visa

Hello! I'm currently enrolled at a Chinese university for one semester so I have an X2 type. But I wanna stay for one more semester and I wanna be able to travel outside of china. Is it possible to change to a X1 type here? Some of my friends have been told they need to go back to their countries to do it.
