US Citizen traveling HKG-Shanghai-HKG

Hi -
I'm wondering if I can use the 144 hr visa-free approach if I'm flying US-HKG, then staying for 2 days, then fly HKG-SH for 2 days, then flying SH through HKG to US?

I'm afraid your case doesn't suit the 144h visa free transit as you will depart from and arrive at HK when transferring in SH. Therefore, you should apply for a transit visa.
