About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Best way for a US citizen with Taiwanese passport

Fly from US and intend to stay in China for less than 72 hours, then fly to Taipei. Is it feasible to apply 台胞証 on arrival (Shanghai) or better to use 72-Hour Free Transit with US passport? Thanks.

Both are fine. However, if you're applying for Taiwan Compatriot Permit at Shanghai, then you'll need to hold a valid Taiwanese National Identification Card. OTOH the line is probably longer if you use your US passport, as you can opt to use the "Chinese citizen" line when clearing immigration when using your Taiwan passport.
