name confusion

I have been sent an email by someone who signed themselves Chen YuanZhe. The "From" field in their email says Yuan Chen. I would like to start the reply "Hello X" - what should the X be? Yuan? (eg if it was from an English person Mark Jones, I would reply "Hello Mark"). Also, is there any way of telling whether this person is male or female? Thanks!

Oh, according to this situation, 'Chen' is surname. But I cannot figure out whether this person is male or female only based on 'Chen Yuanzhe'. Thus you are advised to start the reply 'Hello Chen'. This would be ok. :)
