About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Can I use the 72 visa free option if I fly in and to Hong Kong?

I guess my question is whether Hong Kong is considered outside China. I'd like to visit Guilin for 3 days prior my flight to the US from Hong Kong.

Hong Kong is considered outside china but you cannot fly Hong Kong - Mainland china - Hong Kong since you are returning to the same country/SAR that you entered mainland china from.
