About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Flight that transits Beijing on the way to Shanghai

If my United Airlines flight makes a stop in Beijing on its way to Shanghai, can I qualify for the 144 hour free transit since Beijing is not one of the three cities listed? I will not be leaving the airport in Beijing.

No, this does not qualify. Two stops in China (Beijing, Shanghai) immediately limits you to 24 hours visa-free transit.
