Flying from Bangkok to PVG, then board a ship round trip from Shanghai cruise port for 5 nights.

I also plan to stay in the city for 4 nights ( city sightseeing ). Then I will fly back to Bangkok. I am a US citizen, do I need a visa for China visit?

For your case, a visa is needed. You can apply for a L type in advance.
