UK to Tokyo with Stop in Shanghai on return leg

I am planning to travel from UK (british passport) to Japan (Tokyo) via Shanghai. On return from Tokyo (staying for 7 days), I wish to explore Shanghai for 1 night (24 hours). Am I able to do this on the return leg?
