About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Hong Kong to Shanghai- Do I need a visa ?

I am visiting family in Shanghai- travelling from Hong Kong back to Hong Kong on a British passport. I am a permanent HK resident- I plan to sty in Shanghai less then 72 hours

You cannot enjoy 72 hr free transit in Shanghai because HK-Shanghai-HK is not a transit. You need to apply for a visa for that beforehand.

Of course you'll need a visa as Mainland China is a separate jurisdiction.
