FREE VISA- Round trip in Shanghai, traveling to Japan in between

I am Canadian, and I have an round trip ticket to and from SH, but in between I will be visiting Japan. Could I qualify for free visa ?
- Arriving ~ 4 days stay
- Leaving to Japan on the 4th day
- 9 Day later, I will return from Japan to Shanghai to go back home.

Do I qualify for free visa or should i apply for one ? or can I make an exception as it will be less than 144 hours around trip?

Thanks.

Both trips are eligible for 144h visa-free transit. No visa is needed. After getting to airport, do apply for a stay permit at the immigration counter. Show it and you will be allowed to leave airport.
