invitation letter for application

Do I need an invitation letter to visit hong kong or china for holiday purpose? and if i don't know anybody there isn't it possible to come visit the country as a single tourist?

If you don't know anyone in mainland China, you can ask an “Invitation Letter for Tourist” from Chinese Tourist Bureau for the application. In addition, you don't need the letter for HK as long as you can provide flight tickets and hotel booking record.
