hostel in shanghai

Question

Hi, if we are planning on staying in a hostel in Shanghai for 5 nights on our way from Indonesia back to Canada (via Los Angeles), do we still need to register with the local police station or will most good hostels do it for us ? That would be more convenient, obviously. Is it a serious offence if we don't register al all ? Thanks in advance.

The hostels will do it for you. Not registering with authorities will technically come with an administrative fine if discovered. However, the chance of being discovered is almost nonexistent.
