About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Denied flight check-in

I was denied check-in for my flight to Kunming because I did not have a Chinese visa at time of check-in. I would have had a 12hr layover there before another flight to Qingdao, where I would have a 22hr layover prior to my return flight to the U.S. Would I have been able to board the flight to kunming, and handle my Chinese entry permit while at KMG? I didn't plan to leave the airport for either locations anyway, but now I'm stuck in Thailand trying to figure out what to do since I do not have enough funds to buy a whole new return ticket back to the states. I understand the 72hr free transit only applies to one stop, though if I was staying within the airports at all times, would I still need to obtain a entry permit? Does qingdao allow 72hr free transit? Any information will help to shed light on a confused and hard-pressed mind. Thanks.

Stephanie, you need to apply for a visa for that. You can try to find a travel agency to see if it can help you about this.

The contract of carriage clearly states that passengers are responsible to have the appropriate visas. In your case, it is obvious that you failed to fully understand the rules. It is common knowledge that whenever the transit involves domestic flights, the passenger would have to clear customs and immigration at the first port of entry so that you would be treated as a domestic passenger. It does not matter if you leave the airport or not.

Yes, you were correctly denied boarding. Lessons learnt. Do your research in advance and make sure you always have enough on your credit cards to buy an expensive ticket if necessary.
