does the 72 hour clock reset between cities ??

Question

Would like to travel from US to Hong Kong to X'ian to Beijing and back to USI understand Hong Kong doesn't need a VISA.I understand X'ian & Beijing qualify for 72 hour free transitNot clear on the travel from Xian to Beijing...does this disqualify another 72 hour free transit.Seems only one city trip allowed from Hong Kong to use a 72 hour free transit.

Hi, if you travel like US-Hong Kong-X'ian and Beijing-US, you cannot enjoy 72 hour free transit because  of your layover in Beijing. You are advised to apply for a visa for that beforehand.
