About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Round trip from Hong Kong

If I understand your explanation correctly I cannot fly from Hong Kong to Shanghai and back to Hong Kong. I must go to a country other than Hong Kong when leaving Shanghai?

Yes, that's right (unless you get a visa). Hong Kong to Shanghai to Macau would work without a visa.
