About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

FRA->PVG->AKL and back in 72 hours

Flying FRA->PVG->AKL and back in 72 hours. I have around 18 hours in Shanghai each way. This seems to meet the criteria for the 72 hour Free transit, however I don't know the intricacies of this... Is there any restriction on entering China twice within 72 hours transiting to a third country?

No need to worry. You can use the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai in both directions. Nice trip!

Watch out. If your flight is delayed or cancelled and you are using only a 24-hr permit, you may be fined or worse for overstaying your visa and denied the ability to ever apply for a free 72-hr permit. Apparently you need to know 4days in advance if there is any chance that forces you to exceed 24 hours.

24-hour direct transfer only applies if you intend to stay within airport boundaries correct? Or did I read that wrong? I would prefer to spend the days in the city.

You are eligible for the 24 hr direct transit, and you need also to apply for a free temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at the airport. Afterwards, you can leave the airport to explore the city. Don't worry!
