About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can we use that 72-Hour Visa-Free Transit?

We are heading to Australia from Finland in November. We have a stop in Beijing and we spend 1 night in local hotel. In the next day we are heading to Australia (Sydney) but we have one stop in Canton (We are in Canton Airport 2h 15min until we leave to Australia). We are coming back in January (2018) and we fly to Beijing from Sydney and we have one stop in Canton Airport (Between Sydney and Beijing. We stay there 2h 25min until we leave again). In Beijing we spend 2 days until we leave back in Finland.

If you have two stops in China you are limited to 24 hours only (from scheduled arrival time in China to scheduled departure time from China). You are not allowed 72 hours free transit.

Whether this is true, even though we are only at the airport in Canton

It is definitely true. It doesn't matter if you leave the airport or not. It doesn't matter if you don't even leave the plane. If you touch down twice in China (Guangzhou and Beijing) then you are limited to 24 hours. That's the rule. So either get a visa or change your itinerary.
