About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

We asked our hotel about visa requirements

and they said we needed one to stay there is this correc? We are arriving by cruise ship in shanghai 17th oct 7am and flying out pudong airport on 20th 1.20pm to Heathrow via Copenhagen.

That itinerary is compliant. I've no idea why would ask your hotel about your visa situation since Chinese missions and immigration are in charge of this and an innkeeper would not be an expert on visa policy.
