Will I need a travel entry permit?

Hello: I have a RETURN ticket from Canada to Guangzhou Nov. 9 - 27th. However, I plan to fly from Guangzhou to Hainan Island ONE WAY on approx Nov. 13th. Will visit Haikou and Sanya, then fly ONE WAY to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam for a 6 day visit. Will then either fly to Hong Kong for 1-2 days then take the train back to Guangzhou or fly back to Guangzhou the day before my return flight to Canada. In all of this, do I need to apply for a Chinese visitor's entry permit?

You'll need a visa because you cannot travel outside Guangdong province during your stay in Guangzhou, and Hainan is a separate province. Visas for Canadians are multiple-entry, valid for the life of the passport, and only $100 Canadian.
