About:China Transit Visa

Do I need VISA to transit if my layover is 20 hrs at shanghai,An Indian citizen returning India

My flight from Chicago (China eastern Airline) will land at Shanghai at 8 PM and my next connection to my final destination Delhi (China Eastern airline) is at 2.30 PM next day from Shanghai. I am an Indian citizen returning to India. Am I eligible for 24hr transit as I want to stay in some city hotels outside the airport?
Can my airline (China eastern) deny me to board me at Chicago as I don't have the transit G type for china, although I have printed tickets for the onward journey ( also by China eastern at the same terminal, change of terminal at Shanghai is not required) to India within 24h?

Hi, 24 hr direct transit can cover your trip in mainland China. Maybe you won't be denied to board me at Chicago.
