Do I need my airline to do this?

I will fly LAX-PVG. I have a ticket for PVG-NRT two days later. Do I qualify for the waiver, and do I need to contact my airline to make any arrangments?

Norm, yes, you will qualify for the 144 hour visa-free transit in Shanghai. You need to inform that airlines that you want to use the free transit in Shanghai when you board the plane in LAX.

According to your situation, you can enjoy 72-hour free policy. You may need to inform your airline and they will make the application to the border control authorities of the PVG for your stay permit. You may prepare your passport and onward air tickets in advance. The followings are the specific procedures.
Inform the airlines when boarding – Fill an Arrival/Departure Card on the flight - Apply the 72-hour permit – Claim the luggage – Go through the custom - Leave airport
