I applied for an S1 visa but was issued an S2 type. CAN it be converted?

Cant. Unless the person who invited you is your son/daughter, husband/wife. S1 visa applies on these criteria. Other than than S2 will be provided for the other family members. btw, S1 can stay up to one year and S2 is less than 6 months, depends on the consulate of your country how long they gonna you.
