embarkation on the same day after arrival at pvg

Question

I am flying in from U.S to Shanghai to a cruise ship.  Embarkation will be on the same day probably lessthan 12 hours.  Do I not need a Chinese visa when taking advantage on the 48 hours free transit?

If you will go to a third country or region instead of US after stopping in Shanghai, you can use the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. No need to apply for a transit G type then.
