I was thinking about visiting Xinjiang during golden week this year (october 2017).

Is the region popular with Chinese tourists? I'm hoping to go somewhere to avoid the crowds (I live in Shanghai).

Well, there will be a lot of people travel to the hot tourist cities during the golden week. However, the attractions in Xinjiang may be not quite crowded, unlike the Forbidden City in Beijing.
