Padmini, you cannot get transit G type in China upon arrival. You don't need double entry if you travel like India-Shanghai(24 hours)-Japan-other cities in China because you are eligible for 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. But you should tell the consular officers at the immigration inspection counter that you want to use the visa-free transit for the first time, hence you can save it for your next entry.
