20 Hour stay in Hong Kong

I had asked before about staying in China for 20 hours between flights while returning to Japan (coming from the US). Specifically, I will be in Hong Kong. Is the 24 hour transit rule the same for Hong Kong?

HK and mainland China carry out different exit and entry policies, so the 24 hour direct transit is not applicable in HK.
USA passport holders can enjoy free entry to HK for a stay of not more than 90 days, so no visa will be needed then if you go there for only 20 hours.
