American in Thailand want to visit China before going back to USA

I have a chance to visit China for a week but I am in Thailand and I need to get a visa. I know I can go to the Chinese consulate in Bangkok and get a visa. What I want to know is, what documents do I need to take and how long will it take?

If you want to apply for a tourist L type, you need to provide passport and its copy, a completed application form, a passport-style photo, round trip air tickets and hotel reservation, as well as valid entry record for Thailand. Usually, it takes 4 working days to get the result after you submit the application.
