About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

After noting question above - fly into Shanghai then cruise out.

Is it possible to fly Brisbane to Hong Kong - then HK to Shanghai - Shanghai a night or two - then cruise out of Shanghai on 144 hour free transit\? Main reason I am asking is the stop-over in HK - although Australians don't need a visa for HK, just wondering because HK being part of China? Just making sure I cover all my bases and don't end up with the wrong visa! I will check with my cruise line too.

If you have read the intro then you'll know HK is considered as a third country, so departing from HK will not make a difference.
