Would this itinerary work for a visa free visit?

Chicago-Beijing (two-hour layover) and onto Shanghai (spend night then transfer to cruise from Baoshan)- Cruise goes to Japan and then returns to Shanghai (Baoshan). Would depart after cruise ends for Hong Kong. Then return to Beijing for 2 to three nights. The cruise is four nights.
