Stop over in Beijing for 3 to 5 days while flying Air China from Sanfrancisco To Mumbai. My options?

I hold American passport and will be flying Ar China from San Francisco (SFO) to Mumbai (BOM), India. My flight is via Beijing. I want to make a transient stop over for 3 to 5 days in Beijing as a tourist. What are my Visa options and cost.

If you stay in Beijing for 3 days (not exceeding 72 hours), you don’t need a visa; but if you stay there for 5 days, you need to apply for a visa in advance.
