Marie, if you travel like UK-Shanghai (1 night)-Japan-Shanghai (4 nights)-UK, you will be able to enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai in both directions. No need to apply for a visa then.

At the cruise terminal where you'll be clearing immigration and customs.

Hi Marie. I'm flying from uk to Shanghai stopping 2 nights then picking up cruise to Japan. Then returning to Shanghai for a night then flying back to uk. I've tried everywhere to get an answer on what if any visa I need. I'd like to hear from someone in the uk that's done this. I'm at a loss completely. Thanks

Hi, Lo, so your travel route will be UK- to Shanghai(2 nights)- Japan-Shanghai(1 night)-UK, right? If yes, you will qualify for the free transit program in Shanghai in both ways. No visa is needed then.
