About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Traveling to shanghai from hawaii thru japan

hello i am attending a NAB conference in shanghai i travel from hawaii to japan to shanghai and back does the 144 hour visa apply

HNL-Japan-Shanghai-Japan-HNL is not going to work, but HNL-Japan-Shanghai-HNL will.
