I will be flying on United Airlines from Hong Kong to Washington DC (IAD) with connection at Newark Liberty (EWR) in August 2017. I would like to take the ferry from Shekou Port to HKIA. I have noticed that I can check in and check the luggage with United Airlines and go through customs at Shekou Port so that the ferry can bring me directly to the gate. But I also noticed that the Baggage tag-through service is not available with United Airlines at the port. Does that mean that I have to check my luggage at the airport again? Since our flight departure time is in the morning (10:25 am) and we can not afford wasting any moment on the way to the airport from Shekou, I would like to have an idea on these details in order to estimate whether we should take the ferry to the airport. Which airport? HKIA or the connection airport in Newark? It does not make sense to me that, if I check my luggage while checking in with UA at Shekou port, I have to take it out and check it again at HKIA. Thanks.

Since the Shekou Port doesn’t provide United Airlines with the Baggage tag-through service, you need to claim your baggage when you arrive at HKIA by ferry, and then you may recheck it at the airport.
