About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hi, is it necessary (or even possible) to obtain the 72-hour visa?

How do I go about this? I am a Canadian passport holder flying Kuala Lumpur-Shanghai-Canada.

Yeah, you can get the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai if you stop there for less than 144 hours. When you board the plane in Kuala Lumpur, you need to inform the carrier that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai. When you arrive at Shanghai airport, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the 144 hour free transit.

Thanks for your good reply. So do I just inform my plane carrier when I check in for my flight or must it be done at least a few days before that?

You don't need to do anything before that, except print out your Shanghai-Canada confirmed flight ticket. You will need to show it at check-in in Kuala Lumpur and also when you arrive in Shanghai.
