i have a 17 hour layover in beijing on the way back to us and would like to see china for the day, what would i need?

Bell, if you travel like Thailand-Beijing(17 hours)-US, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing. You need to prepare your passport and the air tickets to apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration office when you arrive at the airport.
