Hotel inside Wuzhen west gate entrance or outside the gate?

We would like to stay 1 night in that water town. Thinking about reserving a hotel in walking distance just outside the west gate entrance to verses reserving a hotel inside the gate just because the accommodations outside the gate look nicer and cheaper. Please let us know if we could still walk inside the gate early morning and stay inside the water town until late in the evening?
