About:FAQ of Chinese Visa Application

Multi stops but only exiting airport for one

Hello, I have two stops in China but will only be spending 15 hours outside the airport in one of the two stops. 72 hour free visit applicable or do I need to get a visa? Thanks.

Kathmandu to kunming (16 hour layover), kunming to shanghai (18 hour layover), sfo is final destination. Thanks.
